Gastroscopy
Gentle diagnostics of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum
What is a gastroscopy?
Gastroscopy is an endoscopic examination in which a thin, flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) is inserted through the mouth. This allows changes to the mucous membrane in the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum to be detected, assessed and, if necessary, treated directly.
When is a gastroscopy necessary?
- Clarification of complaints – e.g. heartburn, difficulty swallowing, nausea, upper abdominal pain or anemia.
- Early detection of changes – such as inflammation, ulcers or tumors in the upper digestive tract.
- Taking tissue samples – for more precise clarification of unclear findings (e.g. Helicobacter pylori, suspected tumor).
- Treatment during the examination – e.g. hemostasis, removal of polyps or insertion of a PEG tube for feeding.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
How do I prepare for a gastroscopy?
You must remain fasting (usually from midnight) so that the stomach and duodenum are easily visible.
Can I go home immediately after the gastroscopy?
After a short monitoring period, you can leave the practice – but only if accompanied, as you are not allowed to actively participate in road traffic due to the sedation.
When can I eat normally again after the gastroscopy?
As a rule, you can eat again the same day, preferably light food.
Approximately 1-2 hours after the sedation has worn off – after consultation with a doctor.
Is a gastroscopy painful?
Thanks to light sedation (twilight sleep), most patients feel nothing of the examination.
What happens if something is discovered?
Suspicious findings are either treated immediately or biopsied for further clarification.
Is a gastroscopy performed on an outpatient basis?
Yes, our practice offers outpatient gastroscopies so that no hospitalization is required.
