Colonoscopy

Prevention and diagnosis with modern endoscopy

Colonoscopy is a gentle and effective examination method for the early detection of changes in the large intestine (colon) and rectum. In our practice in Berlin, we carry out this examination on an outpatient basis in order to provide you with precise diagnostics and targeted treatment without hospitalization.

What is a colonoscopy?

Colonoscopy is an endoscopic examination in which a thin, flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) is inserted through the anus. This allows the mucous membrane of the colon and rectum to be closely examined and any abnormal tissue changes to be directly removed or sampled.

When is a colonoscopy necessary?

A colonoscopy can be useful for various reasons:

  • Screening examination – for the early detection of intestinal polyps (benign growths), which can develop into colon cancer if left untreated.
  • Clarification of symptoms – In case of persistent abdominal pain, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss or suspected chronic inflammatory bowel disease (e.g. Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis).
  • Treatment of certain tissue changes – With special techniques such as endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), conspicuous changes can be removed directly.

Example: Detection of intestinal polyps

How long does a colonoscopy take?
The examination usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.
Can I go home immediately after the colonoscopy?
After a short monitoring period, you can leave the practice – but only if accompanied, as you are not allowed to actively participate in road traffic due to the sedation.
When can I eat normally again after the colonoscopy?

As a rule, you can eat again the same day, preferably light food.

Is a colonoscopy painful?

Thanks to light sedation (twilight sleep), most patients feel nothing of the examination.

What happens when polyps are discovered?

If polyps are found, they can be removed directly during the colonoscopy to prevent a possible malignant change at a later stage.

Is a colonoscopy performed on an outpatient basis?

Yes, our practice offers outpatient colonoscopies, so no hospitalization is required.

Why should I have a colonoscopy for colorectal cancer screening?
Bowel cancer often develops from initially harmless polyps. If these are discovered and removed at an early stage, the development of cancer can be prevented.
