Chronic inflammatory bowel disease
Welcome to the CED Center in Karlshorst. Our focus is on the comprehensive care of patients with chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We offer first-class diagnostics and treatment for ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.
Ulcerative colitis
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammation of the large intestine that usually progresses continuously and is characterized by recurring diarrhoea, often with an admixture of blood, as well as abdominal pain and fever.
The inflammation usually affects the mucous membrane of the large intestine and can lead to serious complications such as intestinal perforations or the risk of bowel cancer.
Forms of therapy for ulcerative colitis
- Drug therapy: Aminosalicylates, corticosteroids and immunomodulators are used to inhibit inflammation.
- Biologics: Modern biologics target specific inflammatory processes and can be used in severe cases.
- Surgery: In severe cases, in the event of complications or treatment failure, surgical removal of the inflamed section of bowel may be necessary.
Crohn’s disease
Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that can affect the entire digestive tract from the oral cavity to the anus, but most frequently the transition from the small intestine to the large intestine.
The symptoms are varied and range from abdominal pain and diarrhea to weight loss and fistulas.
Forms of therapy for Crohn’s disease
- Drug therapy: As with ulcerative colitis, aminosalicylates, corticosteroids and immunomodulators are also used here.
- Biologics: These are used to block specific inflammatory mechanisms, particularly in severe or treatment-resistant cases.
- Nutritional therapy: Special diets and nutritional concepts can reduce inflammatory activity and alleviate symptoms.
- Surgery: Crohn’s disease may also require surgical removal of severely inflamed sections of the bowel, particularly in the case of complications such as fistulas or abscesses.
